Common Elbow Conditions

Cubital Tunnel Syndrome

Cubital tunnel syndrome, also known as ulnar nerve entrapment, happens when your ulnar nerve gets irritated or compressed at the inside of your elbow. This can result in numbness, pain, or weakness. Symptoms of cubital tunnel syndrome are numbness and tingling in the hand, weak grip, or clumsiness due to muscle weakness, or aching pain on the inside of the elbow. Treatment for cubital tunnel syndrome is rest and stopping any activity that aggravates the area or a splint/foam brace for the elbow.

Tennis Elbow

Tennis elbow is a degeneration of the tendons that bend the wrist toward the palm of the hand. These tendons are located above the medial epicondyle, the bony bump on the inside of the elbow. Although it is often referred to as a tennis elbow, this condition can be caused by any repetitious use of these muscles. Symptoms of tennis elbow is burning or pain on the outer elbow that may travel to your wrist, stiffness or pain on the outer elbow that may travel to your wrist, stiffness or pain when extending the arm, or a swollen elbow joint. Treatment for tennis elbow is physical therapy, rest from activities that aggravate the area, or a splint.

Elbow Bursitis

Elbow bursitis is when the bursa, a thin fluid-filled sac located at the elbow’s boney tip, becomes inflamed and irritated. This can happen due to trauma, prolonged pressure, or infection. Symptoms of elbow bursitis are swelling around the elbow, pain when moving the elbow, or discoloration and warmth in the area. Treatment for elbow bursitis is resting the area so it will heal, medication to take down the inflammation, or immobilizing the elbow through means of a brace.
