For the Perfect Fit, Ace the Lace

Often something as simple as the way we lace our shoes can help alleviate foot pain and prevent injuries. If you have a specific foot problem, acing the way you lace might help. Follow these simple guidelines from the American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society (AOFAS) to ensure a better fit:

  • When purchasing shoes, pay special attention to the number of eyelets. More eyelets mean greater opportunity to adjust for a custom fit.
  • To prevent stress on the eyelets and the back supports of the shoes, loosen the laces thoroughly before slipping your shoes on.
  • Always lace shoes from the bottom up. As you work your way from the toe area to the ankle, gently tighten by pulling the laces of one set of eyelets at a time.

Now that we know a few general lacing tips, let’s explore lacing techniques for different foot shapes:

Narrow feet: Use the eyelets farthest from the center of the shoe. This method will secure the sides of the shoe for better support.

Wide feet: To give your feet more space, use the eyelets closest to the center of the shoe

Feet with varied width: If you have a narrow heel and a wide forefoot, use two laces on each shoe—one for the top half and one for the lower. The lace closest to the heel (top eyelets) should be tied more securely than the lace closest to the toes (bottom eyelets).

Feet with heel problems: It’s okay to use a single lace, but take advantage of every eyelet. Make sure the area closest to the heel is tied tightly and use less tension near the toes.
